Turning Energy Into Action

Wind energy generation provides a viable alternative to combustion of traditional fossil fuels which cause greenhouse gas pollution.

As a clean energy facility, Wigton’s operations contribute to efforts to preserve the environment and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The clean energy generated by Wigton reduces Jamaica’s oil consumption by more than 65,000 barrels each year. With the commissioning of Phase III in 2016, it is expected that the oil demand reduction will be approximately 100,000 barrels annually. Wigton’s output also avoids the emittance of almost 90,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Phase III will push that figure to more than 120,000 tonnes.

Wigton was also the first entity in Jamaica to successfully register Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). As a result the company has successfully traded carbon credits under an Emissions Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA) with the Dutch Government

Thematic Hub For The Caribbean

Power That Fuels Nations

Since 2020, Wigton Energy in its role as the regional Wind Thematic Hub (a joint venture with the Caribbean Centre of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, [CCREEE]), has set various targets to assist the CARICOM region to realize its renewable energy targets and Unconditional National Determined Contribution (UNDCs) emissions reductions. As such, Wigton was contracted to execute a deliverable pertaining to a capacity building webinar for a training manual for wind resource assessment.

1

Targeting all CARICOM states but the first 5 member states participating in the Integrated Resource and Resilience Plans (IRRP) process (Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Belize)

2

Provide member states with tools necessary to obtain the Empirical Data for realistic 5-10-year plans to be included in the IRRPs

3

Provide best practices for wind resource assessments, how measured data can be used to model more general wind atlas, difference in data quality for programme planning versus actual site implementation
